District Governor's Comments May 2014
We are rapidly winding down the year of "Engage Rotary Change Lives "before we "Light Up Rotary". Although I think that our theme this year is one that will live throughout Rotary's history.
There are a couple of very important and exciting events that are happening before we install DGE Stella Roy and I fade off into the sunset. Three weeks to go before Claudia and I, the conference committee, and all the clubs from western Nova Scotia are your hosts at the 99th annual conference being held at the Old Orchard Inn. Educational seminars , top notch inspirational speakers ,outstanding entertainment ,delicious food and nectar of the vines are just a few of the activities waiting for you May 22-25. Not to mention the opportunity to make some interesting new friends. If you have not already done so please register for the whole or part of the conference. If you have trouble finding a room please get in touch with the committee . SEE YOU THERE.
As most of you are aware Rotary has a theme for each of the months ---- well almost all , May does not have any formal distinction except in a number of Districts it is conference month plus the on going training for next year's executive's. This tells us the Rotary year is drawing to an end . A year which for Claudia and I was filled with very exciting club visits ,highly interesting and humanitarian projects which are enhancing our communities and hopefully alleviating the pain and suffering of those less fortunate than us the world over. We have less than two months to finish all those lofty goals that we set out to accomplish a mere ten months ago. I had six goals that I intended to complete this year which I will go into more detail next month, five have basically been successfully completed. Membership is the one area where we may not reach the lofty heights we set out to achieve. On the positive side membership will be up year over year and for this I thank everyone for their efforts especially membership chair Paul Roy.
There have been at least two clubs that have increased their numbers dramatically , one has achieved this by getting their community involved with what they do . A lesson here I think for all of us. It is much easier to bring members in than to get them involved and retain them. How do you make members feel part of the club, convince them it is the work they do that gives Rotary the power to eradicate polio, build schools ,drill wells , and all the other good work we do locally and around the world.
Having said that someone asked you to a meeting and introduced you to a world of service ,why don't you do the same?

Participate in YOUTH EXCHANGE and become young again !
Ever wanted to know more about Youth Exchange? Is your club currently involved, been involved in the past and would like to jump in again, or want to get involved for the first time? As part of our mandate from the District to foster and grow the Rotary Youth Exchange program in 7820, there will be a one day information, training, and strategy session on YE on May 22, prior to the District Conference. Youth Exchange Officers from all clubs currently active in YE will be there. We would like to open the session to any other Rotarians interested in getting involved at either the club or District level.
