Celebrate International Day of Peace – Ideas for Your Club
Rotary believes that when people work to create peace in their communities, those efforts can have a global effect.
On 21 September, Rotarians around the globe will mark the International Day of Peace, celebrating the everyday actions that bring people together, foster understanding, and build stronger, more resilient communities. Peace is one of Rotary's seven Areas of Focus, and it is woven into everything we do. Through service projects, peace education, scholarships, and strategic partnerships, Rotary members help address the root causes of conflict—from poverty and discrimination to limited access to education and unequal opportunities. Every project, every conversation, and every act of service have the potential to create lasting change.
As International Day of Peace approaches this September, why not make peace the focus of one of your club's activities? Even a simple event can spark meaningful conversations and inspire action...
Here are a few ideas to consider:
- Make peace the theme of a September meeting. Invite a Rotary Peace Fellow, a district peace committee member, or a local community leader to speak. You could also use the meeting to brainstorm a local peace project and consider appointing a Club Peace Chair to help keep peacebuilding front and centre throughout the year.
- Build partnerships in your community. Connect with organizations such as International Cities of Peace, the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation, or local community and faith-based social justice groups. A joint event or discussion can strengthen relationships while promoting a shared commitment to peace.
- Share stories that inspire. Feature a peacebuilding book, such as Global Voices for Peace, to encourage discussion and fresh perspectives among members.
- Celebrate peace champions. Invite members to share a favourite peace quote or talk about someone they consider a personal "peace hero" and why that individual inspires them.
- Gather at a local Peace Pole. Invite club members and the public to come together for a brief ceremony. Share reflections on what it means to be an everyday peacebuilder, read an inspiring message, or simply take a moment of quiet reflection.
- Discover Rotary peace projects. Visit the My Rotary Project Center and explore projects in the Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution area of focus. These examples may spark ideas for your club's next service initiative.
