Halifax Explosion Project
This year, Rotarians from the 6 Metro Halifax/Dartmouth/Sackville Clubs are travelling to Boston to spend a day of activities with Rotarians from Boston and surrounding areas culminating in the Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Boston Common on December 1st. A tree is sent from Nova Scotia every year as thanks for the help Halifax received from Boston in the aftermath of the Halifax Explosion. This year’s 45 foot tree is from Ainslie Glen, Cape Breton. Among the music entertainment for the expected 20000 plus people in attendance will be Cape Breton’s THE TOWN HEROES.

This is the beginning of a new relationship with Metro Halifax and Boston Rotarians that will culminate in return visits from them to Halifax for the 100th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion on December 6th, 2017. It is hoped that through the year 2017, clubs in both cities will work, enhance and build their humanitarian projects to help less fortunate people in the same unconditional spirit that Boston helped Halifax in the aftermath of the explosion.
In 2017, a team will be struck comprising metro Halifax club members to build out a program for the year and commemoration events on or around the December 100th anniversary date.
The folks in Boston and Halifax are looking forward to forging new Rotary friendships and cooperation on project ideas to capitalize on the already strong bond that the people of these two cities have with each other.
