Every morning most of our school children in the Strait Area take it for granted that the big yellow bus will roll up to their driveway and take them to school. However, for rural Africa this is just a dream.

Students there trek for several miles to receive their education as no transportation is available to them.  The Rotary Club of Port Hawkesbury is helping turn this dream into a reality for hundreds of students in the Limbe area of Cameroon.  Rotarian Pete Smith has been the driving force behind this project, and this January the Rotary Club of Port Hawkesbury shipped two school buses to Cameroon which were donated by the Annapolis Valley School Board.  This brings the total number of buses to 4 which the club has overseen in the past several years.

“The impact these buses have made to the education system and the overall health and happiness of the children has been indescribable” says Smith.  He adds, “It brings our club members great satisfaction to know that even in Port Hawkesbury you can make a direct impact in helping the world’s poor; seeing that they have access to a proper education.”

Proudly displayed on each bus is the Rotary International logo and the Canadian flag. ACL Shipping transports the units from Halifax to Douala, Africa, which takes 30 days.

The Port Hawkesbury Rotary club thanks a number of Rotary clubs in Nova Scotia, the Rotary Foundation, Richmond Academy Interact club, and Joe Shannon for making this possible.
