Rotary Club of New Glasgow - Read with Rotary
On Saturday Dec 10 the Rotary Club of New Glasgow participated in their 11th annual “Read with Rotary” event at the New Glasgow Library. Teaming up with the Adopt a Library Literacy Program (AAL) the New Glasgow club invites children to come to the library to enjoy an hour or so of having stories read to them, seeing Santa and just enjoying the library and what it has to offer. By participating with Adopt a Library, the Rotary Club of New Glasgow fulfils its literacy component of RI’s Presidential Citation and their annual monetary contribution to AAL goes to buying more books for distribution to the children in the local area.
Each year Adopt a Library gives close to $1million of books directly to the children of Nova Scotia. It’s motto of “Fighting Crime, One Book at a Time” refers to the fact that 60% of the inmates of our jails cannot read and understand a simple newspaper. If we can get our children to read at an early age we undoubtedly will keep many of then out of trouble with the law.
AAL also promotes the WOW reading challenge where children in schools and libraries compete for the title of World Reading Champions. Participating children will receive free books or small toys as prizes.
