Paul Harris Fellowships Awarded to District Conference Team

The Co-Chairs and the Program Chair of the 2017 District Conference District were Awarded Paul Harris by DG Elva Heyge.
 
Congratulations to Co-Chairs Pierre Hoebers and Brian Smith as well as program Chair Rob Porter.
 
 
There is an old saying that goes: If you need something done well, ask a busy person to do it.
 
Brian Smith is a busy person. He operates a consulting practice that takes him to many parts of the province and beyond, and voluntarily serves as a mentor to  Dalhousie MPA program students as well as on a Town of Kentville advisory committee. That is just a part of what he does in the community.
 
And then there is Rotary. He joined the Kentville club in 2005, and since then has served on most committees and as President in 2010-11. He has also chaired several projects and provided major input to the club’s Strategic Plan.
 
Yes Brian is a busy man, and that made him a natural choice to co-chair the Organizing Committee for this Conference.
 
Pierre Hoebers is also a busy person. Pierre began his Rotary experience in 1998 with the Centennial Club in Calgary where he was in the travel business. He served that club in many roles, including as President in 2009-10.
 
In 2011 Pierre and Corinne retired to the Annapolis Valley and Pierre joined the Rotary Club of Kentville. He immediately became immersed in club activities, serving on several committees and chairing, on two occasions, the club’s principal fundraising project. He also authors the weekly newsletter that keeps members informed and engaged.
So, along with Brian, Pierre was an obvious choice as Committee Co-Chair.
 
The two of them have done an outstanding job in organizing and guiding an energetic conference committee, with the results we are seeing this weekend.
 
Brian and Pierre, thank you for a job so well done in true Rotarian fashion and I would now like to present you with a symbol of my appreciation for your outstanding efforts.
 
Rob Porter
 
When the Co-Chairs and I began to consider possibilities for a Program Chair for this Conference, one name was an immediate and unanimous choice – Rob Porter.  Rob had done an outstanding job in that position in 2014, and it made sense to ask him to reprise the role this year.
 
Following a career in the RCAF, during which he flew jets in Europe and served at NORAD HQ in Colorado Springs, among many other things, Rob and his wife Jan retired to the Annapolis Valley where Rob joined the Rotary Club of Wolfville.  Later he helped found the Mud Creek Club, and still holds the coveted position of (as he says) Secretary for Life. He has also served as ADG for South and West NS for three years.
 
For his efforts in supporting charitable organizations and activities, Rob was recognized this year as Wolfville’s Volunteer of the Year.  But he still found time to lead the Program planning for this conference and once again has done an outstanding job.
 
Rob, thank you from all of us and please come forward to accept this symbol of my and our gratitude for a job incredibly well done.
