Hurricane Matthew Relief Opportunities

The impact of Hurricane Matthew will be felt in our district as well as in Haiti & the Bahamas for a long time. Many Rotarians have asked how they can help.
 
Following a special district board, I will share with you what we learned about the impact of the storm and the ways in which you as Rotarians could help, if you so choose.
 
 
In Sydney Cape Breton
 
  1. EMO – coordinating help from Federal & Provincial sources
  2. United Way – Accepting donations on their website at: https://donate.unitedway.ca/index.php? WID=WCAPEB or at their office via cash or cheque at 245 Charlotte Street Cape Breton. (Because of the small size of office staff, they would prefer donors use the on-line facility)
  3. Distribution of funds –  Salvation Army
  4. Rotary clubs  are providing support through financial donations, volunteering and assistance in distributing funds.
  5. THE NEED: FUNDING FOR IMMEDIATE NEEDS – FOOD, INSURANCE GAPS, SMALL DAMAGES
 
In District 7020: (Bahamas & Haiti)
 
  1. Haiti – damages occurred in small area of Haiti. The immediate needs are roofing & water filters The goal is to provide this aid to 1000 homes. The estimated to repair each home ($250 US - $200 for roofing materials & $50 for water filter) The details on how to donate can be found at : http://portal.clubrunner.ca/50041/SitePage/hurricane-matthew-ways-to-give . This information was provided by Rotarian Jillian Gibson, and she knows the members of the committee personally and has every confidence that the funds will reach the people in need.
  2. Bahamas – received a direct hit as a Category 4 storm. The damage is very extensive. Contributions can be made to that recovery through the portal mentioned above.

  4. THE NEED: HAITI – CASH FOR ROOFING MATERAILS & WATER FILTERS; BERMUDA – CASH TO ASSIST WITH SHORT TERM NEEDS
