Donations to Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund

We have all witnessed the drama and devastation of the ongoing fires in and around Fort McMurray and many people in District 7820 have direct connections to people impacted by the fire.At the District Conference held from May 12-15th there were several fundraisers and clubs were offered the opportunity to make pledges to the cause.
PDG Duncan Conrad put together a package that includes a one night stay at the Delta Prince Edward, Charlottetown, a Duncan's Island Tour and a 1000 Paul Harris Credits to be transferred to the successful bidder. The tour and hotel are valued at $600.00 CDN and the Paul Harris credits are worth $1000 US. After some spirited bidding, the successful bidder was Rob Christie of the Pictou Club. Thank you Rob! And thank you for your generosity Duncan!
In addition, PDG Pete Smith donated an oil panting by Rotarian George Lewis, an artist who is famous for his artworks that are often donated to Rotary causes. Tickets were sold and the draw was made on Saturday evening. Dan Currie from the Rotary Club of Pictou won the draw. 50% of the $950 raised will going to the Red Cross for Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund; the remaining half will go to support Pete's work in The Cameroon.
The Rotary Clubs of Truro, Lunenburg, North Sydney, New Waterford, St John's NW, Yarmouth, Stephenville, Windsor, Dartmouth, Waterford Valley, Sydney Sunrise, Avalon NE, Sackville & Area, New Minas Sunrise and the E-club of Atlantic Canada pledged a combined total of $9,000. RI President's rep pledged $1,000 (US) or about $1,250 CDN. Charlie A'Court performed at the Gala donated 25% of his CD sales that night to the effort as well.
In all a total about $11,900 was pledged during the Conference. Outstanding! And we know that other clubs and Rotarians will want to be involved. The details on making donations follows.
The Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation has established the “Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund” to assist in the rebuilding of that city following this tragic fire. The Charitable Foundation is now ready to accept donations for which tax receipts will be issued. The Foundation will rely on an independent committee of Fort McMurray stakeholders (including the Rotary clubs and the municipality) for advice on disbursal of the funds.
Donations may be from individuals or corporations. Rotary clubs may wish to facilitate this process by collecting donations and then forwarding either the individual cheques or a cheque drawn on the club’s account for the total amount, along with a list of the donors and their addresses and postal codes.
