District Executive 2014-15

Three experienced Rotarians  make up the Executive of District 7820 for 2014-15. Each brings their own experience and skill set to the job of helping our District be successful during the year.
 
Stella Roy
DG 2014-15
 
Born in England, Stella graduated from St Thomas' Hospital in physiotherapy in 1978, moved to Penticton, BC in 1980 to do a locum and to learn to ski. She moved to Nova Scotia in 1985 to upgrade to a degree and sail her laser. Stella lives and works in Halifax as a Physiotherapist and has pioneered work in Women’s Health in Nova Scotia.
 
Stella began her Rotary journey with the Bedford Sackville and District Rotary Club in 1994 and could not imagine the impact that Rotary would have on her life. Her club now is The Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside and she served as Club President in 1996-97.
 
Stella’s main interest has been sharing the Rotary experience. She has been District Trainer for the last 3 years and is a discussion leader for the Rotary Leadership Institute. She finds at each session she learns more than she gives.
 
Stella has been involved in a number of Club and District committees. One of the highlights was as GSE District Outbound Chair. She worked with the Team Leaders and saw firsthand the changes in team members when they returned from their month in India, Nigeria and Australia.
 
Stella’s passions in Rotary include Shelterbox; traveling to the Dominican Republic with a team to build a garden in a Batte and more recently to Nigeria on a team with Ann Lee Hussey for NID; and being part of the District Team.
 
Stella met her husband Paul on a rally with the Halifax Harbourside Rotary Club. Paul is also an active Rotarian at both the Club and the District level.  Stella’s hobbies include sailing, paddle boarding and walking with her dog Sailor
 
It is the people Stella has met in Rotary that has truly enriched her life. Stella looks forward to the opportunity to Serve the District as District Governor in 2014-15 and promises to work hard to help other Rotarians develop and continue their own journey's, tell their own stories and Make a difference for the people of the world

Jim Goit
DGE 2014-15
 
Jim grew up on a farm in Ontario and completed his education earning an MSc from the University of Guelph. He joined the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing as a Soils and Crop Specialist in 1976.  In 1986 he became a Director and worked with several branches over the years.  In 2000, Jim was appointed Executive Director, Development and External Relations with the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.  His division was responsible for all communications, marketing, alumni relations and fundraising for the College.  He retired in March of 2012.

As a member of the Rotary Club of Truro since 2005, Jim has been very active in helping one of the oldest service groups in the town modernize and implement plans to continue to give back to the community of which it is a part.  He has served on many Club committees, was recipient of Rotarian of the Year in 2008-09; was President of the Club for 2011-12, is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Rotary International Bequest Society.

Jim has taken on an ever increasing role with Rotary at the District level.  He is a board member of the Atlantic Rotary Leadership Institute as well as a Group Discussion Leader.  He was founding chair of the District Social Media Committee and has lead the process to get clubs involved with using these communication tools.

Jim and his wife Barbara (also a Rotarian and past president of the Rotary Club of Truro) built their home in Valley, Colchester County. They have two grown sons who, with their families, live and work in Ottawa.  Jim and Barbara are proud grandparents.

In the winter months, Jim can be found on the ski slopes. As a ski instructor he shares his love of skiing with others.  When there is no snow he is on his bicycle and can be found many mornings on the roads around Colchester County, Nova Scotia.
 
Elva Helge
DGN 2014-15
 
A native of Nova Scotia, Elva was born in the Annapolis Valley and graduated from Acadia University with a degree in Chemistry in 1965. She pursued her science career, first at Alcan in northern Quebec, and then at McGill University in Montreal. In 1981 she returned to Nova Scotia to study at Dalhousie University and graduated in 1983 with an MBA in finance. For the second half of her career, Elva worked with the federal government as an administrator of federal real estate in the Atlantic Provinces, and lived for a period of time in each of the Atlantic Provinces, except PEI.
 
Elva joined Rotary in 1999, and has been a member of the Rotary Club of Kentville since that time. She served her club in most positions, including president in 2005-06. Elva began her district involvement 2006-07, serving as assistant governor for western Nova Scotia, as District Grants Chair and finally as District Foundation Chair, a position which she still holds.
 
Elva’s passion in Rotary involves the promotion of international understanding and good will. To this end she has been involved in leading international projects for a number of years and has taken part in several Rotary Friendship Exchanges.
 
As District Governor Nominee, Elva looks forward to working with District Governor Stella and District Governor Elect Jim to move forward the strategic plan for the district and to get to know more members of our district.
