It is with great sadness that we report the passing of PDG Trevor Atkin ( 98-99) this past Thursday Feb 27 2014. Trevor was a dedicated Rotarian and wonderful friend to many in this district. News from our District Governor
We may be in the midst of the coldest time of year but Rotary is sizzling in the District. From Youth services Vicki Chalker and her committee are hard at work planning and preparing for an exciting District wide RYLA for Rotoract in 2015. The Riverview Interact club made the floor of the Nova Scotia Assembly by way of a special resolution presented by MLA Alfie MacLeod for their work in international service. Being recorded by Hansard this now becomes a permanent record in Nova Scotia history . Congratulations to the Riverview club and Rotarian Bob Munroe their mentor. Still on the issue of Youth services, the Yarmouth Rotary club is sponsoring a Interact club in the local High School and the charter has been applied for. Finally this past week St. John's clubs presented DGE Stella Roy with a cheque for Polio Plus that will help vaccinate 187,000 children . Congratulations to AG Bruce Templeton and St.John's Rotarians.
On the membership front PDG Tom MaCaughey has been the driving force behind the formation of an after hours club in St. John's . At their first gathering this past week a number of potential new members were present. Best of luck with this Tom and hopefully this will be a template for many more. Membership chair Paul Roy is busy generating interest in a e-club .
DGE Stella Roy has started training of next years Presidents and Secretaries . Mini conferences have begun and I would encourage you to attend the one being held in your area . It is a great way to meet Rotarians from other clubs and hear very informative and interesting speakers.
March is literacy month . Probably not on the top of most clubs agendas , but certainly a problem within our society and also world wide and why it is part of our foundations six areas of focus. So how can motivated clubs promote and celebrate Literacy month. Please consider the following,
(1) create awareness
(a) Schedule a speaker on a literacy topic .
(b) Present a literacy recognition to teachers, students, or civic leaders who have promoted the cause of literacy in the community.
(2) Undertake a project
(a) Do a basic literacy project
(b) Do a functional literacy project.

News from our Membership Chair
We all know the great work that Rotary does and it makes us feel good.
In order for our clubs to do more good unto our local and global communities we need more members. Our District has been a leader the past three years with membership growth in Canada. This year to date we have not been as successful. We have just completed our eight month of our Rotary Year and the District is at the same membership number we were at July 1st. 1601 members. Only 14 of our 46 clubs are showing a membership growth. Many clubs are the same membership number and a few clubs are in declining membership. The district has a goal this year to grow by 1 % that would mean adding 16 new members for the year. We can not achieve this with out your clubs help.
Rotary is very good at bringing in new members however we have not been very good at keeping them. People join Rotary for Rotary’s ideals.
People don’t leave Rotary. They leave clubs that do not live up to the new members expectations. They key is to get the new members engaged. We suggest you assign a mentor to help the new member understand Rotary and the mentor helps them get involved in the committee they are passionate about. New members joined Rotary to serve.
In other exciting news the membership committee is at the beginning stages of forming an E-club in the District. James Pineau of the Rotary Club Of Stratford PEI will be the chair. We ask that you take notice of announcements from the district and let us know of potential new members who may be interested in joining this exciting new concept in Rotary.
Your district membership committee is happy to make club visits and help your club identify ways to attract and keep members. The tools are there. Your club may only be one piece away from being a vibrant and growing club.
Together we can make our goal and have growth again for the fourth year in a row.
