Charlottetown Rotarian receives Order of Canada

 Image Daphe Elizabeth Dumont, QC, OC The Office of the Governor General of Canada has recently announced the appointment of Daphne E. Dumont, QC to the Order of Canada, one of the highest public recognitions that can be conferred on a Canadian citizen. Ms. Dumont has been a member of the Rotary Club of Charlottetown since 1990 and has served actively on various committees in that club during her 21 years of service with Rotary. Ms. Dumont was born in Charlottetown and attended schools in Charlottetown, Halifax and Ottawa before attending Queen’s University where she received an Honours BA in history and philosophy. From there, she attended the University of Oxford, Wadham College where she was the first female law student in what had been formerly an exclusively male college. Ms. Dumont received an honours degree in law there in 1976 receiving her MA in law in 1983. She returned to Canada to complete her training in Canadian law taking a degree in law from Queen’s University in 1977. Ms. Dumont has been in continuous private practice as a lawyer specializing in family law since her admission to the PEI bar in 1978. She has been a partner in the Charlottetown law firm of Macnutt & Dumont since 1982. Ms. Dumont was awarded a Queen’s Counsel designation in 1995. She has served on numerous committees of the Law Society of PEI and of the PEI Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. Having served on numerous senior positions with the Canadian Bar Association Ms. Dumont was elected by members of the Association as its President to serve between 2000 - 2001. Since serving as President Ms. Dumont has served on several special committees established by the Association with the Government of Canada in outreach international projects, particularly in China. Ms. Dumont has also been active in numerous community and church groups in Charlottetown.
