GOODMAN, Hyman Joseph (Hy) - 170 Abercrombie Rd., New Glasgow, died August 8, 1992, at home. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Harry and Clara Goodman. He was educated in New Glasgow, later attending Urban Military Academy, California, becoming a senior cadet captain and head boy. He attended Acadia University and Maritime Business Academy. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the second battalion Pictou Highlander Reserves as a training officer, 1942, qualifying as a major. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 28, Stellarton. He was a businessman for over 50 years; director and officer of Goodman Company Ltd. department stores until their closure. Interested in advertising, he won a number of national awards. At an early age, he formed the first New Glasgow Boy Scout Troop in 1923. He was charter president of Community Concerts; past president of Board of Trade, Bluenose Curling Club, and Abercrombie Golf Club; director and president of Rotary Club of New Glasgow, becoming district governor of Rotary International, district 782, in 1973 and in 1980 received Paul Harris Fellows award. At the time of his death he was active as club archivist. He was district chairman for World Community Service, completing many projects in third world countries.
