MORRISON, FREDERIC CHARLES
aged 90, 250 Terrace Street, New Glasgow
passed away on Friday, December 1, 2000, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Dr. Charles and Margaret (Duff) Morrison. He was a resident of New Glasgow since 1946 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow. He attended public school in Cape Breton and later entered King's Collegiate School in Windsor. He graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science and later graduated from the Nova Scotia Technical University with a Bachelor of Engineering. After graduation, he worked at the Dominion Steel Plant in Sydney for two years, later transferring to the head office in Montreal. Following the war years, he returned to Montreal, and after six months, resigned to return to Nova Scotia, to make his home in New Glasgow. Following two years as representative for a Montreal company, he formed his own company, Fred C. Morrison Limited, a Company distributing ball bearings and power transmissions throughout the Atlantic Provinces. He served as founding member of PICORD and was its President in 1971-72. He was president of Thorburn Coal Mine. The Province of Nova Scotia presented the Company with the Environmental Award in 1983 as a result of their work. He was a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Mining Society of Nova Scotia and was presented with a Certificate of Merit Award by the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia in 1987. He became a Life Member of the Association of Professional Engineers in 1994. His community service included being elected councillor, Town of New Glasgow in 1951, serving two terms, President of New Glasgow Music Festival, receiving distinguished service award in April 1988, served as President of the Pictou County Community Concert Association, President of Nova Scotia Lung Association, Vice-President of the Canadian Lung Association, served on the Board of Christian Education, Maritime Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, received Certificate of Appreciation from the Town of New Glasgow for his voluntary service to the community in 1985, served as Secretary of the former Board of the Aberdeen Hospital, member of the Aberdeen Hospital Foundation, member of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society, member of the New Glasgow Rotary Club, of which he was President in 1956-1957, District Governor for Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Nfld., in 1966-67, following which he was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by the New Glasgow Rotary Club. He was one of two Canadians to have the honour and distinction to be elected and installed as head of the four Grand York Rite Bodies - Most Worshipful Grand Master, Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia (1967-1968) - Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Nova Scotia (1962-1963) - Most Puissant Grand Master, Supreme Grand Council, E.J. of Canada (1972), and Supreme Grand Master of the Sovereign Great Priory of Canada, Knights Templar (1983-1984). His great interest and contributions to Masonry extended beyond the boundary of Canada, and was well-known, travelling on many occasions to England, Scotland, Ireland, and all parts of the U.S.A. He was a life member of A.P.E.N.S. and was awarded the distinction of Business Person of the Year by the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce in 1992. He is survived by his daughter, Noreen Morrison, New Glasgow; Granddaughter, Trilby, Grandson, Patrick; Brother, Duff, Sackville, N.B.; Sister-in-Law, Helen Morrison, Toronto. He was predeceased by his Wife, the former Kathleen Grant and by a Brother, Dr. Allister. His remains are resting at the H. W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, with visitation today from 2-4;7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Dr. Glenn Matheson officiating. Burial will be in the Church Brook Cemetery, Little Harbour. Donations in his memory may be made to the United Way of Pictou County, The First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, or to the charity of one's choice. The Doric Masonic Lodge will meet at H. W. Angus Funeral Home at 6:45 P.M. today to conduct their service.
